Georgian parliamentarians have voted in the third and final reading of the law on mass amnesty for prisoners.

84 MPs voted in favour of the law. The document will be sent to the country’s President, Salome Zurabishvili, for her signature.
It should be noted that earlier the ruling party “Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia” proposed a bill that would allow about one-third of all convicts in Georgia to be released from serving their sentences or have their sentences reduced by half, a quarter, or a sixth of what they were holding.
As the party’s executive secretary, Mamuka Mdinaradze, explained, the amnesty will cover around 6,000 prisoners. More than 1,000 of them will be released once the law comes into force, and the rest will have their sentences reduced.
The amnesty will apply to people convicted of crimes committed before July 1, 2024. It will not apply to murderers, drug dealers and rapists, or those who have committed serious crimes.
