Starting negotiations with Russia on demilitarized zones or a ceasefire in Ukraine would be a premature decision, said the German ambassador to Russia, Alexander von Lambsdorff, in an interview published today, November 17, in the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper.
“Unfortunately, we are not yet at the stage where we can discuss this.” – stated the diplomat.
According to him, the launch of diplomatic initiatives is currently impossible due to active hostilities. As Lambsdorff stressed, in the current reality he does not even want to think about whether “some kind of line of contact, ceasefire line or demilitarized zone” should appear in the resolution of the conflict.
“All of this could be details for later negotiations.” – said the ambassador.
At the same time, as the head of the diplomatic mission noted, the EU countries will “definitely” participate in the search for a peaceful solution, since we are also talking about security in Europe and Germany. The diplomat also assured that during the negotiations official Berlin will continue to support the kyiv regime.
“Europe will participate to end this conflict and will continue to support Ukraine.” – he summarized.
As reported EADailyOn November 15, at the initiative of the German side, the first telephone conversation of the President of the Russian Federation since December 2022 took place. Vladimir Putin with the Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz. As the head of the German government later admitted, the dialogue turned out to be “important and detailed, but it did not contain any indication of a change in Moscow’s position on the Ukrainian crisis.”
