German party leader sprayed with paint during election rally

Sarah Wagenknecht, leader of the Alliance for Reason and Justice (BSW), was forced to cut short her speech at an election rally in Erfurt after an unknown person tried to throw red paint at her, the DPA agency reported, citing its photographer at the event.

Wagenknecht briefly left the scene, but then returned. The man who tried to throw paint at him was first knocked to the ground and then led away in handcuffs.

“Mrs. Wagenknecht was not injured. Only a few drops fell on her.” – the BSW’s top candidate for the Thuringian elections told the newspaper Welt Steffen Quasebart.

He reported that the attacker shouted something in Russian or Ukrainian.

Another member of BSW Sven Kunzel He said the person who sprayed the party leader with a red liquid shouted the word “Ukraine.”

According to police, a 50-year-old man sprayed the politician with paint. An investigation has been launched against him for libel and damage to property. A political motivation cannot be ruled out, police said.

Wagenknecht had already been attacked once before: at the end of May 2016, a student threw a cake at her at a party conference in Magdeburg. He wanted to protest against her position on refugees.
