Germany is short of 5,000 police officers to control its borders

The German Interior Ministry’s plans to introduce temporary controls at land borders require more than 5,000 new police officers, the Bild tabloid reported, citing the German Police Union.

Bild quotes the president of the German police professional association Andreas Rohskopf:

“In order to carry out additional checks, up to 5,000 additional federal police officers are needed, taking into account the needs and specifics of the work.”

As Rohskopf pointed out, police officers are already forced to work with an ever-increasing workload, while “thousands of investigative materials” related to illegal migration lie on law enforcement officers’ desks and cannot be “processed due to lack of staff.”

“Crime at train stations is increasing rapidly, and at airports the threat posed by climate activists alone is becoming more serious. Federal police also ensure the security of critical infrastructure and football matches.” – Roskopf said.

According to the union’s president, the introduction of temporary controls at land borders will require “additional resources and efforts” from law enforcement, which, given the shortage of staff, will place a “greater burden” on the police.

However, as the publication notes, Roskopf’s demand to increase the staff by more than 5,000 people seems “hardly feasible” due to the acute budget deficit. The total number of federal police officers in Germany is about 42,000 people. In recent years, the staff has increased by more than 20%.

Previously EADaily reported that the head of the German Interior Ministry Nancy Pen The US has ordered the introduction of controls at all land borders of the country starting from 16 September. It should be noted that the new regime will last for six months and will aim to combat illegal migration.
