Germany tightens rules for benefit recipients

Starting January 1, 2025, refugees in Germany will have their benefits (Bürgergeld) reduced by 30% for three months if they reject a reasonable job offer. This was reported by NTV with reference to sources from the country’s government.

“At the same time, it will be considered normal for the trip to the proposed workplace and back to take up to three hours a day. In addition, anyone who misses an appointment at the employment center will face a 30 percent reduction in social benefits for one month.” — quotes the ntv telegram channel “DW* in Russian.”

The changes were initiated by Labor Minister Hubertus Heil and the measures aim to ensure that cash benefit recipients go to work.

For those who, after receiving the Bürgergeld, get a job and work for at least one year, a bonus of one thousand euros is awarded.
