Global energy consumption is growing faster than the amount that can be delivered by water, wind or solar power plants. In 2024, more fuel fuel was released again.
The numbers come from the “statistical review of World Energy”, which has been published since 1952, published by the London Institute of Energy. The report that appears every year gives an overview of most of the world of energy in all areas. For this purpose, the so -called primary energy consumption is recorded – for example, how much coal, gas or oil is used at power plants and oil refineries. The numbers are such a good indicator for the state of energy transition around the world.
In all regions of the world, demand has increased in all forms of energy, so the primary energy used around the world from 580 Exajoules (trillions of Joule) increased to 592. About 8 percent of them – more than when before – it took renewable energies and another 5 percent of nuclear energy.
Energy consumption in Asia, especially in China, India and Japan, increased most. Nevertheless, 60 percent of the growth of renewable energy sources also decreased to China. In Germany, the renewable share was 14 percent much higher than the average worldwide.
It is unlikely that any countries with a large number of renewable energy sources
The annual report shows that there are hardly countries that actually dispute most of their energy from renewable energies. Only four countries, namely Iceland, Butane, Paraguay and Norway, generate more than half of their energy from renewable energies. In Germany, a renewable share was 14 percent significantly higher than the average in the world of 8 percent.

Data also show how inefficiently firing fuel. According to the Institute of Energy, 59 percent of energy are lost as heat when using fossil energy sources, but greenhouse gases are still produced during burning. There are no losses in renewable energies.
In 2024, more than half of the primary energy escaped around the world in 2024 – they presented gray on the graph above. For a neutral climate system, renewable energies should replace only the red parts of the graphic, less than half of today’s primary energy requirements.
