Government approves distribution of 70 million for 14 municipalities in the Doñana area

This Tuesday, the Council of Ministers approved the distribution of 70 million euros to finance local initiatives that promote sustainable development in the surroundings of the Doñana National Park. This was announced by the Third Vice President and Minister of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, who came this afternoon to explain this new royal decree approved by the government led by Pedro Sánchez.

“Today we take a new step in our commitment to Doñana,” Ribera said at a press conference, recalling that this aid responds to “the commitment [del Gobierno central] with the Government of Andalusia” to renounce the law that the Executive of Juan Manuel Moreno had agreed with Vox and that would “exhaust” the natural space, said the vice-president.

Teresa Ribera explained that the distribution of these 70 million for the Doñana area of influence will benefit 14 municipalities, a “direct transfer” to the City Halls – with Almonte at the head – which will receive these funds in two installments, one this year and another in 2025.

“Restoring nature requires more than water infrastructure,” said Ribera, who defended support for local governments in favor of economic diversification. With this new distribution of funds, the central government seeks to promote circular economy actions in the territory, sustainable mobility, interventions in the water cycle and the renaturalization of urban land, among other aspects.

It was last March that the central government announced this aid of 70 million euros “on equal terms” for 14 towns near Doñana: Almonte, Hinojos, Aznalcázar, Bollullos Par del Condado, Bonares, Isla Mayor, Lucena del Puerto, Moguer, Palos de la Frontera, Pilas, La Puebla del Río, Rociana, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and Villamanrique de la Condesa. Already in this initial announcement, two municipalities – Almonte and Hinojos – expressed their disagreement, although Vice President Ribera stressed this Tuesday that all municipalities will receive the aid, regardless of their position.

Ribera said that in the coming weeks individual agreements would be finalized with the affected municipalities, after describing the measure as a “significant step” for the success of the protection of the defense of Doñana, which is in Europe “the cathedral of ecosystems.” “wet.”
