Government delays vote on spending ceiling in Congress this Thursday to avoid further defeat

The government has decided to postpone the vote on the deficit trajectory —or spending ceiling— expected this Thursday in Congress due to lack of support. The Executive of Pedro Sánchez tried unsuccessfully to add the votes of the seven deputies of the Junts, so that the spending ceiling, a necessary preliminary step for the subsequent approval of the General State Budgets (PGE), was not going to be approved.

The government thus avoids a new parliamentary defeat. The postponement is sine die and the Executive will continue negotiations with Junts after its rejection, according to government sources. Sánchez wants to exhaust all possibilities to reach an agreement that he considers positive for the autonomous communities and municipalities. In this way, you gain time to achieve your goal: to have a PGE of 2025.

The formula used by the government to postpone the vote is the withdrawal of the text approved by the Council of Ministers, identical to the one that had already been rejected in July, which could now be modified and approved again for the Junts to support it.
