Government delegate to the Canary Islands denounces the fact that migrant minors sleep in CATEs and calls for “legal reform”

The Spanish government delegate to the Canary Islands, Anselmo Pestana, denounced on his social networks that “yesterday unaccompanied foreign minors They slept in the Temporary Reception Centres for Foreigners (CATE) in Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, which violates international treaties for the protection of minors.

Pestana recognizes “the strain and deficiencies suffered by the child protection services of the Government of the Canary Islands, because I know those suffered in the care of adults that correspond to the Government of Spain, which I represent”, but “the one-sidedness “This is not the solution.”

“The adults left this morning before the minors, which goes against all criteria and, of course, against the best interests of the minor”. As he assured, “there were resources today to assist them, by order of the TSJC.”

These statements come after the precautionary suspension of the protocol for the reception of unaccompanied migrant minors by the government of the Canary Islands, after several weeks of tensions between administrations.

Anselmo Pestana stressed that “unilaterality is not the solution, but rather support, dialogue and legal reform»and hoped for an agreement between all parties. “I hope that common sense will prevail and that the PP will support a fair reform that avoids, in the Canary Islands and other Spanish territories, the lack of co-responsibility of the rest of the autonomies” and the distribution of migrants.
