Government uses Guaidó as an example to justify rejection of recognition of Edmundo González

The Congress of Deputies voted this Wednesday in favor of the recognition of Edmundo González Urrutia as elected president of Venezuela. However, the government opposes this recognition and argues that she should remember what happened with Juan Guaido.

In January 2019, Guaidó proclaimed himself president in charge of Venezuela during a demonstration against the government of Nicolas Maduro. Donald Trump, then president of the United States, took only a few minutes to recognize him as the legitimate president.

Spain and more than 50 other countries, including France and Germany, have joined in this recognition.. However, this had no real impact on Venezuelan politics and Guaidó ended up in exile in Miami and relegated to the background.

NOW, The PSOE acknowledges that this recognition was unnecessaryand their partners at Sumar describe what happened in 2019 as a “failure” and therefore rule out repeating the operation with Edmundo González.
