The president of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, was the target of graffiti and hostile slogans on Friday, November 8, by pro-Palestinian activists who opposed her arrival at Lyon-III University, but she finally exchanged calmly with the students.
“I proposed to these young people that they did not want me to dialogue. “They didn’t want it, they preferred violent action.”he lamented at the end of his visit, stressing that he wanted “always favor dialogue”.
“We are in democracy, the President of the National Assembly that I am must be able to go to any part of the territory (…) This is my role and I will never give up.”he added.
“Yaël get out of there”, “Genocide, outside our universities”, “Free Gaza” EITHER “Free Palestine” : Several messages in large letters were sprayed overnight near campus. Some were quickly eliminated.
Around 200 protesters continued in the same register the afternoon before the arrival of the Macronist deputy, chanting “Israel criminal, Yaël complicit” EITHER “Yaël, get out of there, Lyon-III is not yours”.
“Fascist drift”
The Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, denounced the “fascist derivative of activists who exploit the tragedy experienced by Palestinians”. “Full support for Yaël Braun-Pivet, whom far-left protesters with anti-Semitic ideas want to expel from a university. The Republic is at home everywhere”wrote the minister (Les Républicains).
For his part, his colleague from higher education, Patrick Hetzel, condemned “The anti-Semitic insults pronounced against Yaël Braun-Pivet and the unacceptable actions of student groups that occurred in Lyon-III are strong”. “My firmness against anti-Semitism and any form of political exploitation of the university is total”reacted in X.
In a brief press release, cited by Agence France-Presse, the University of Lyon-III condemned “with the greatest firmness the unacceptable and scandalous inscriptions that have been labeled” and announced that he had taken legal action. According to the university team, video surveillance images show, shortly after midnight, five authors of these inscriptions, dressed in dark clothing, hooded and hooded, including a young woman.
“Scream of Anger”
Yaël Braun-Pivet was traveling through the Rhône on Friday as part of Parliament’s opening policy. Several left-wing organizations, including the unions Solidaires Etudiant-es and the National Union of Students of France (Unef) or the local section of Jeunes Insoumis.es, denounced their arrival in Lyon-III, describing it in a press release as “prominent figure of unconditional support for the criminal actions of the State of Israel”.
