This Tuesday took place the third edition of the Global Mobility Call during which Mayor José Luis Martínez Almeida announced the award of the competition for the development of the preliminary project of the second phase of burial of the ‘A-5, linked to Operation Camp.
This preliminary project will consist of covering the Paseo de Extremadura between Avenida del Padre Piquer and Avenida de la Aviación, a section that will extend the tunnel of the first phase by two kilometers. The plan contract, valued at nearly one million euros, will have a preparation period of 12 months.
With the intention of making Madrid the best city to live in, the mayor recognized that “we must continue to build infrastructure that improves mobility conditions and at the same time the quality of life in the city.”
The contract, valued at nearly one million euros, gives meaning and continuity to the underground works, which will generate 80,000 square meters of green spaces, corresponding to the Promenade Verte Sud-Ouest. In addition, this will also allow the generation of lanes reserved exclusively for the circulation of public buses. This responds to the commitment to extend the undergrounding of the A-5, which will transform mobility and life in the south of Madrid. “These sustainable mobility policies aim to improve the quality of life in the city to encourage caring policies to become one of the characteristics of Madrid, thus generating economic growth and social cohesion,” says Almeida.
Operation camp
After a 19-year break, the operation linked to the second phase of covering the A-5 is reactivated, which will allow the construction of 10,700 housing units on the land of the former military barracks in the southern zone, more precisely in the Latina and Carabanchel districts.
The urban project will cover more than 2 million square meters, will regenerate a degraded area and revitalize the space for the construction of housing, of which 60 percent will be protected, a percentage that is equivalent to 7,000 housing units that will benefit from some protection: 3,800 will be limited price, 2,100 will be basic public protection and 1,100 will be rented. The rest will be free housing.
The history of the project dates back to the early 2000s, but only until now has progress been visible. Construction of the homes is expected to begin between 2026 and 2027 and take approximately three years.
