Dozens of protesters, including Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg, blocked a main road in Brussels to protest against European Union (EU) subsidies for the oil and gas industry.
Oku.Az This was reported by the newspaper “Politico” on October 5.
Thunberg and members of the environmental movement “Extinction Rebellion” tied themselves to the ground in a metro station near the European Parliament and European Commission (EC) buildings.
At the same time, participants in the parallel action held near the European Parliament building said they took to the streets because they were fed up with slow progress in the fight against climate change.
“Politico” clarifies that EC President Ursula von der Leyen has asked her new team to start the process of gradually eliminating oil and gas subsidies. Last year’s report showed that the EU still spends more than €100 billion a year on fossil fuel consumption, a figure that has risen sharply as a result of the energy crisis since the start of the conflict in Ukraine.
