Swedish activist Greta Thunberg was arrested during a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Copenhagen on Wednesday morning. The protest, organised by the Students Against Occupation movement, took place at the entrance to the University of Copenhagen, where demonstrators, including Thunberg, blocked the entrance to protest the university’s collaboration with Israeli academic institutions.
Photos published in Danish media showed Thunberg, wearing a keffiyeh, being arrested by police along with other activists. Prior to this, on her Instagram page, Thunberg said that years of attempts to achieve a severance of academic ties with Israeli universities had been unsuccessful and that protests would continue “until the demands are met.”
The protests have intensified amid the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, following Israel’s invasion by the Hamas terrorist group on October 7. Thunberg has been actively using her social media to raise awareness on the issue, supporting protests against Israel’s actions and criticising “Zionism”.
The Copenhagen demonstration is not the first time Thunberg has participated in pro-Palestinian protests. In October 2023, she spoke out in support of Palestinians and took part in demonstrations in Sweden, accusing Israel of war crimes.
Thunberg also took part in anti-Israel protests during Eurovision. Demonstrators chanted banned slogans and called on Israel to stop fighting in the Gaza Strip.
