Group of scientists urge Illa in letter to prioritize fight against climate emergency

More than 1,000 people from academia and social entities sign a letter demanding that the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, prioritize ecological transition policies during his mandate that has just begun. The campaign is called The legislature of no returnand proposes a meeting with the head of the Catalan Executive to address the fight against the climate emergency.

The letter was published last June, coinciding with Environment Day and already appealing to the future new president, and received the support of new scientific voices this Monday. In total, there are 16 professionals of recognized international prestige who are leading the initiative. These include Francisco Doblas-Reyes, director of the Earth Sciences Department of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and author of the IPCC report; Manola Brunet, president of the Climate Services Committee of the World Meteorological Organization; Ignasi Ribas, director of the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia; or Enric Sala, National Geographic explorer and director of Pristine Seas.

There is also Mar Reguant (ICREA-CSIC), Jaume Terradas (CREAF-UAB), Albert Ruhí (University of Berkeley, USA), Javier Martín Vide (UB-GECC), Carolina Gabarró (ICM-CSIC) and Jordi Bascompte (University of Zurich).

The appeal is very concise. “We call on the president to publicly draw up a roadmap for the ecological transition in Catalonia, based on scientific consensus and the participation of the main economic and social actors in the country,” they emphasize. In this sense, they request a hearing with Illa to deliver the signatures and “launch the proposed process.”

“We are getting dangerously close to the point of no return, and politicians must be aware that this legislature is the one that will decide the country’s resilience to face this crisis,” said Marta Torres, director of the climate program at the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI).

Among the demands they intend to transmit to the Illa are the adoption of climate policies based on scientific evidence and better coordination of all the departments of the Generalitat involved, from Agriculture to Territory or Economy.
