“Azerbaijan, realizing the leading role of the transport sector in climate change, contributes to reducing the carbon footprint and transitioning to a cleaner and more sustainable economy.”
Oku.Az This was stated by Gulnaz Javadova, senior advisor of the Department of Economic Policy and Industrial Affairs of the Presidential Administration (PA), at the High-Level Round Table “Green Urban Transport” of the Meeting of Ministers on Climate and Urbanization organized within the framework of COP29.
“It is a great honor to participate in COP29 today, because we will meet to discuss one of the most critical challenges in building a sustainable future for future generations. Azerbaijan is proud to be at the forefront of this collective mission,” he said.
G. Javadova added that the problems requiring coordinated action in the context of Azerbaijan’s claims, limited infrastructure, high initial costs of electric vehicles and low public awareness of the benefits of sustainable mobility are just some of the Obstacles facing the country:
“The State Commission on Business Environment and International Qualifications, created in 2016, has been a strong supporter and has changed the barriers to initiatives.”
He added that a specific working group was created under the commission and a specific roadmap of initiatives related to the reforms was approved:
“Our reform agenda has been transformative, enabling and resolving infrastructure issues. To encourage the use of environmentally friendly vehicles, we introduced an 18% VAT exemption in January 2022. This exemption applies only to customs clearance of electric and hybrid vehicles and not only during sales, but also applies to the import of electric chargers. Today we have more than 600 chargers installed by the private sector, which demonstrates the strong private investment in green infrastructure in Azerbaijan.”
The PA official said that the import of electric cars to Azerbaijan has increased 33-fold in the last 3 years:
“This underlines Azerbaijan’s commitment and belief in creating a sustainable and ecologically conscious future for the world. We believe that transformative changes are possible. Together, we can create a greener, cleaner and more prosperous future for future generations “.
