German Economy Minister Robert Habeck intends to run for German Chancellor on behalf of the Green Party. This was reported by Reuters, citing an informed source.
Habaek himself, after a five-year hiatus, returned to social media, posting a short video on X, where he is seen wearing a bracelet on which was written: “Chancellor of the Era.”
“It’s easy to leave places like this in the hands of loud troublemakers and populists. But taking the easy way out can’t be the answer… That’s why I went back to X.” Habeck said, quoted by US News.
It should be noted that this statement by Habeck was made 10 days before the Green Party congress, in which he is expected to approve his candidacy.
The collapse of Germany’s “traffic light coalition” after months of infighting over budget and fiscal policy has led to snap elections scheduled for March. However, Habeck’s hopes of taking over as chancellor – when elections are held – are unlikely to materialise, as his Green Party trails in opinion polls. Habaek’s party currently has 11% of the vote, down from 14.8% in the 2021 election. This means it is unlikely that he will be able to lead the next government. The opposition Conservatives are currently in first place with around 32%.
