In Iran, after a certain pause, the execution of sentences handed down by the country’s courts against prisoners has resumed. Thus, on the morning of October 29, four fingers of the right hand of two brothers named Mehrdad Teymuri and Shahab Teymuri were cut off with a guillotine in the Urmia central prison.

The fingers of the 34 and 39 year old brothers sentenced to this sentence for robbery were cut off with the participation of the representative of the judicial body and the penitentiary administration. According to the information provided, after that the prisoners were taken to the special department of the Khomeini hospital in Urmia for the necessary medical procedure and after a certain time they were returned to solitary cells in the prison. After the execution of the sentence, they have not been allowed to meet with their families and friends. According to information provided by one of the relatives of the Teymuri brothers to local law enforcement organizations, the execution of the sentence of cutting off their hands occurred thanks to pressure from the Urmia prosecutor, Huseyn Majidi. Five more prisoners sentenced to the same sentence are reported to be currently held in Urmia Central Prison, and human rights organizations are seriously concerned about the possibility of their execution.
After this incident appeared in the global media, several international human rights organizations also commented on the issue. In particular, the Amnesty International Organization – “Amnesty International” expressed its strong objection to the amputation of the hands of the convicted and “called on the international community to take immediate measures to stop this state-sanctioned torture and put pressure on the Iranian authorities. abolish all forms of physical punishment.”
The statement issued by the organization reads: “Amputation as a form of punishment is torture, which is a crime under international law and is prohibited by Article 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Iran is a party.”
The organization in question has already issued numerous statements on cases of this type and valued the amputation of the hand as a punishment against humanity and stated in one of its previous statements: “Cutting off a person’s hand and deliberately mutilating it is not justice, It’s obviously torture.” “It is shameful that they execute him in front of other officials.”
