The expression “there are people for everything” has several owners: yes Ortega y Gasset, yes Sánchez Mejías… Everyone uses it but few deserve approval. One of them could be the thief arrested by the National Police in the Puente de Vallecas neighborhood: he used underwear, the condition of which is unknown, as a mask to commit theft and avoid being identified. They weren’t of much use to him.
Of course, before being caught in the act, the individual robbed up to 19 establishments in the area, even taking the servers’ tips in the case of bars. He was an expert at cleaning cash registers, according to file sources.
The investigation began in early May when it became known that attacks were being committed in the region. After analyzing all the complaints, officers found that they all had something in common: When workers opened the business in the morning, they found the windows broken.
The man was an expert in this type of crime as he forced the exterior closures of the metal blinds using a screwdriver to be able to lift it minimally and crawl inside. In this way, he prevented any person or radio patrol from detecting this maneuver and was thus able to act calmly without arousing suspicion.
Once inside the crates, he only took it so as not to attract attention in the middle of the night with other bulky objects. In one case, a small box containing workers’ tips was recovered from a restaurant.
The police verified that in just five months he had committed 19 robberies with force in different neighborhoods in the south, such as Puente de Vallecas, Villa de Vallecas or the municipality of Leganés, among others.
His last attack took place at the end of October, when he was leaving a cafeteria in the capital where the police found him “in flagrante delicto”, his face covered with black underwear, a black cap and socks with the hand. For all these reasons, this man was arrested and brought to justice as allegedly responsible for 19 violent thefts in commercial establishments.
