Pepe Alvarez He was re-elected this Wednesday as general secretary of the UGT during the union’s 44th Confederal Congress, which is being held in Barcelona. This will be your third consecutive term at the head of the organization he has led since 2016.
Álvarez assumed the position of general secretary after succeed Cándido Méndezwho held this position for 22 years. Since then, he has led the organization in a period marked by labor reforms and economic challenges, establishing himself as one of the main representatives of Spanish trade unionism.
Natural from Asturias, Pepe Álvarez began his trade union career within the General Union of Workers of Cataloniawhere he was general secretary of the UGT Catalonia for 26 years, until his election as head of the union eight years ago.
His re-election with 79.44% of the votes reinforces the continuity of the project started in 2016, in which the collective bargaining and the defense of labor rights. Like CCOO, the UGT has maintained its role as a key interlocutor in social dialogue with the Government and economic agents.
With this new mandate, which will end in 2028, Álvarez will add 12 years as secretary general of the UGT. This will be his last termaccording to the union’s statutes, which limit this position to three consecutive terms.
