The President-elect of the United States, Donald Trumpannounced this Wednesday the appointment of the former acting attorney general Matthew Whitaker like him next US ambassador to NATO.
Whitaker, a 55-year-old lawyer and lobbyist, was Acting Attorney General of the United States between November 2018 and February 2019, during Trump’s first term, after the resignation of Jeff Sessions.
“Mast. will strengthen relations with our NATO allies and will stand firm in the face of threats to peace and stability,” the Republican politician said in a statement.
Furthermore, he emphasized that the new ambassador will “put America first”the slogan Trump uses to promote a more isolationist foreign policy.
According to the president-elect, Whitaker is “a strong warrior and loyal patriot, who will see to the advancement and defense of the interests of the United States.”
Whitaker graduated from the University of Iowa, where he played on the American football team, the next president noted.
Trump, who previously governed the country between 2017 and 2021, was in his first term very critical of NATO and dishonored its partners of the Atlantic Alliance which They have not allocated enough money for collective defense.
