“He worked for Russia” – EADaily, September 19, 2024 – Politics News, Russian News

Former Chief of the General Staff of the Moldovan National Army Igor Gorgan has been charged with treason, the press secretary of the Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Crime and Special Cases (PBOPOD), Emil Gaitur, told TV8.

He said the criminal investigation is ongoing and the person, by law, enjoys the presumption of innocence until the final decision of the court.

“The person involved in the case previously announced by the prosecutors of the Criminal Code of Ukraine has been given the status of an accused.” – Gaithur said.

Recall that after his resignation in 2021, Igor Gorgan worked as Moldova’s representative to the UN. In June this year, the dubious Latvian portal The Insider* published a “journalistic investigation” into the former Chief of Staff’s alleged connections with Russian intelligence, which was republished by some Moldovan media. Later, the Moldovan Information and Security Service issued a statement “confirming” what was said in the article. The SIS clarified that they have been collecting material on Gorgan, who is suspected of treason, for a long time. In turn, the prosecutor’s office opened a criminal case “for espionage for Russia”, within the framework of which the general was arrested. This was followed by a decree of the Moldovan president. Maia Sandu on depriving Igor Gorgan of all awards and titles.

After this incident, the Speaker of Parliament Igor Grošu He announced that more decisive measures would be taken against people who hold positions in institutions that ensure the country’s security and defence. According to the leader of the country’s ruling presidential party, Action and Solidarity, Gorgan “remains” a “wide network of agents among the security forces.”

As reported EADaily the day before it became known that the Moldovan government had dismissed Gorgan’s replacement as Chief of Staff, Brigadier General. Eduard Okhladchuk. The reason for the dismissal is not indicated.
