THE Regional Commission for Transplantation of Castilla y Leóapproved yesterday the new programs of lung transplantation at the University Health Complex of Salamanca and of autologous bone marrow transplantation at the University Health Complex of Burgos.

Currently, patients from Castile and León who needed a lung transplant They were referred to the communities of Cantabria or MadridWith the approval of this programme for Salamanca, the aim is to improve accessibility to avoid travel outside the Community, as well as collaboration with other autonomous communities that do not have a lung transplant centre, the Commission reports in a statement.

On the other hand, autologous bone marrow transplant, which will be performed at the Burgos hospitalis the most commonly used form of transplantation in lymphoproliferative diseases (leukemias and lymphomas) and is increasingly being performed in elderly patients. The efficacy of high-dose chemotherapy (HDC) and the low toxicity of the procedure, which leads to a reduction in mortality thanks to improved supportive treatments, have led to this therapeutic alternative being offered to a greater number of patients.

Currently, this treatment is carried out in three centers in the Community: the Río Hortega University Hospital in Valladolid, the University Care Complex in León and the University Care Complex in Salamanca. Commitment to Burgos Hospital will reduce number of trips from Soriano and Burgos.
