The Ministry of Health and Consumption of the Government of Andalusia confirmed a case of West Nile virus (WNV) in a person in Linares, Jaén. Faced with this news, the City Hall rushed to publish a press release in which it highlighted several points.
First, the City Hall ensured that Health and Consumption communicated public health measures to municipal officials that they must adopt as provided for in the Comprehensive Program for the Surveillance and Control of Vectors Transmitting West Nile Fever (WNF) in Andalusia to significantly reduce the probabilities of transmission to the population.
On the other hand, since this communication was received, the relevant measures are being adopted, following the recommendations of the experts and according to the protocol established by the Autonomous Administration, to that a specialized company acts to carry out monitoring and control measures appropriate measures to reduce the risk to the population.
Faced with this situation, the Linares City Council asked the population to develop preventive behaviors to avoid mosquito bites during the hours of greatest activity of the species that transmit this disease (in the hours close to dawn and after dusk), both individual –use of approved repellents for topical use and light clothing covering most of the skin–, as a servant –use of mosquito nets or environmental repellents– especially for the vulnerable population whose immunity is compromised.
These recommendations should include avoid accumulation of peridomestic water (gardens, pots, tools, etc.) to prevent them from being used for the development of mosquito larvae.
