Health will ban disposable electronic cigarettes and their flavors

The Secretary of State for Health, Javier Padillaannounced this Monday at Forum Europe that in the coming weeks “the draft modification of Royal Decree 579/2017 will be available, which will include the ban on disposable electronic cigarettes and their flavors”.

This was stated during the information meeting organized by Nueva Economía Fórum in Madrid, where it was presented by the Minister of Health, Monique Garcia. In his speech, Padilla announced that in the coming weeks “the draft modification of Royal Decree 579/2017 will be available, which will include the ban on disposable electronic cigarettes which are harmful to health and due to their environmental footprint” . Likewise, “the ban on flavorings and flavorings in electronic cigarettes and Plain packaging of cigarette packets will be legislated“.

Concerning electronic cigarettes, the Secretary of State for Health recalled that they constitute the gateway for young people to the habit of smoking. Regarding public health, Padilla stressed that “we must do three transformations: the public health strategy law approved in June 2022, the creation of the public health surveillance network recently approved by the Council of Ministers and the creation of a National Public Health Agency which will soon be approved and there is a consensus to get her out.”

But public health “is also action on specific policies such as the approval of the bill on alcohol consumption and its prevention among minors which, we hope, will pass through the Council of Ministers”. before the end of this yearas well as health and climate change policies and tobacco prevention and control.

With the modifications of these laws, Javier Padilla emphasized that they have achieved a reduction of 1,077 deaths per year. Regarding the Comprehensive Plan for the Prevention and Control of Smoking, already passed by the Council of Ministers, he stressed that “it has obtained a good consensus and a good opinion from the autonomous communities within the Interterritorial Council of the National System of Health”.

Now, explained Padilla, “we will face the next step, which is the modification of Royal Decree 579/2017, which manages the elements of manufacturing, presentation and marketing of tobacco products and their derivatives“. Likewise, highlighted Javier Padilla, “during the first quarter of 2025, the reform of Law 28/2005 on tobacco, which includes smoke-free spaces, will be able to see the light of day. When the text comes out, we will see how each of the spaces is concretely justified.”
