Heartbreaking images of the Shah Abbas mosque, which has survived the test of history

Architectural monuments are considered precursors of history and examples of culture. These monuments convey and explain our history that we have not seen, known or heard. One of the monuments mentioned is the Shah Abbas Mosque located in the village of Yanigli of Tovuz region. Years of trials and neglect have led the mosque to an unpleasant fate as it is gradually in danger of being destroyed.

Oku.AzThe villagers they spoke to said they had applied to numerous institutions to restore the historic monument.

They pointed out that although the issue of the restoration of the mosque we are talking about had already been raised before, there was nothing new.

In response to our inquiry, the Press Service of the State Service for the Protection, Development and Restoration of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture stated that the restoration and reuse of the Shah Abbas Mosque, which is in a state of emergency, is on the agenda:

“For this purpose, the historic building has been included in the list of projects planned for construction at the expense of state capital investment in the state budget for the restoration of the historic building. The restoration is planned within the framework of the implementation of investment projects.

In addition, given the large number of historical monuments that need to be restored in the country, we are interested in restoring and using such historical buildings with donations within the framework of the legislation. In this regard, the State Service for the Protection, Development and Restoration of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture carries out promotional work.

It should be noted that according to historical sources the mosque dates back to the 17th century. The mosque is one of the 999 mosques that Shah Abbas I ordered to be built in the Safavid territory. The mosque building, which operated until the 1930s, was used as a warehouse during the Soviet era. In 1984-1986, major repairs were carried out on the building. The external appearance, as well as the style of construction, are almost identical to the mosque of the same name located in Ganja.

The monument from the beginning of the 17th century was built of red brick. The thickness of its walls varies between 1.5 and 3 meters. In the front part of the building there are 8 rooms, 4 on each side, which were used as cells and living rooms (guest room – ed.).

Although the inscription of the mosque has not survived, due to its architectural style and time of construction, it is assumed that this mosque was built by the architect Sheikh Bahaeddin Amili.
