Heavy waterspout in Zaragoza forces traffic to be stopped at the same place where the tragedy occurred in 2023

A heavy rainstorm that fell this Saturday in Zaragoza forced the Z-30, the third belt, to be closed near Parque Venecia, as a precaution and due to the puddles that had accumulated. This is the same place where, in July last year, the water overflowed due to the flooding of the so-called Barranco de la Muerte and left dozens of people in the city trapped in their vehicles – with dramatic scenes. The Z-40 under the Santa Isabel tunnel was also cut, causing major traffic delays.

It should be remembered that after this event, the City Council chaired by the popular Natalia Chueca announced an ambitious project to build a giant canal 2 meters deep, 24 meters wide and more than 300 meters long, which will be located behind the María Zambrano public school. The parents of this school, flooded during the storm of 2023, even considered moving the school to another location. The municipal project was awarded this summer and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

This Saturday, the City Hall reported the aforementioned preventive cut by the Local Police, which has a barracks there, at the Cuartel de la Paz roundabout. The cut goes from Avenida de América towards the Cemetery and from the Veterinaria in the opposite direction. It is expected to reopen soon, once the sewers are emptied. The cut causes a disruption in traffic towards the port and Venice Park.

Problems have also been reported on the Z-40, under the Santa Isabel tunnel, where the road has become waterlogged and has forced driving on a single lane. This section has just been closed to traffic, as reported by the 112 of the Government of Aragon. This has caused significant delays.

Likewise, according to the City Council, there has been an accumulation of water in the Valle de Broto, very close to Fire Station 1, which is also being resolved. And the local police have blocked access to the Fuente de la Junquera path, to which must be added the problems due to water in Galán Bergua and Navarra Avenue.
