In Abkhazia, unrest similar to the current one occurs once every eight months or a year, political scientist Dmitry Evstafiev estimated.
“I am concerned that situations like this are repeated every eight months or a year.” – he said on Sputnik radio, commenting on the protest in the center of Sukhum and the closure of the Gumista and Kodori bridges.
“We have events in which movements of this type emerge out of nowhere, even with anti-Russian slogans. This is a serious issue for Abkhazia’s leaders. Do you control the internal political situation in your country?… Why should we worry? Abkhazia is a sovereign country. So use your sovereignty.” – said Evstafiev.
EADaily reported that on November 11, the State Security Service of Abkhazia detained several opponents for an attack on one of the deputies of the republic’s parliament, who supported the ratification of the investment agreement with Russia. The detainees’ relatives and colleagues responded by trying to ram the doors of the State Security Service. Then the protesters arrived at Freedom Square. Without waiting for an answer about what was happening to the detainees, the opposition blocked the bridges leading to Sukhum to traffic. Cars were stuck on both sides.
As a result, as a result of negotiations between the opposition and the authorities, all detainees were released on November 12 and the roads were unblocked.
On Friday, November 15, the Parliament of Abkhazia will consider the ratification of the agreement signed on October 30, according to which legal entities from Russia can implement their projects on Abkhazian territory. The investment threshold is 2 billion rubles, then the company is exempt from taxes in the republic for 20 years.
