Hezbollah in Syria: media reported serious concerns of the Lebanese government

The Lebanese government is increasingly concerned about Hezbollah’s growing influence in Syria. Reports by Saudi newspaper Al-Hadat cite concerns about Hezbollah’s expansion in the region and use of Syrian refugees for its own purposes.

Lebanese officials privately discuss the seriousness of the situation and the lack of resistance by Syrian Sunnis to Hezbollah forces in the region. According to the newspaper, foreign and Arab diplomats in Lebanon believe that Hezbollah remains strong despite the serious blow it suffered. This opinion is shared by officials in the United States and even Israel.

Lebanon recognizes that Hezbollah has regained its influence in the political sphere and has even resumed its activities in parliament. This suggests that supporters or members of groups associated with Hezbollah continue to receive “compensation” for their actions against Israel, as well as in Lebanon and Syria.

Frustration over the current situation stems from the fact that the commander of the Lebanese army cannot understand why senior Sunni figures refuse to engage in talks with Western countries about the “days after Hezbollah.”

The main concern in Lebanon is the possibility of General Joseph Aoun being elected president of the country. According to many Lebanese politicians, Aoun takes an extremely hard line against Syrian refugees. This concern is reinforced by the suspicion that he may try to use the current situation in Syria to his advantage. In particular, it could take advantage of the rising number of refugees to spur attempted uprisings against Hezbollah, which continues to exert influence in Lebanon.
