Hezbollah pager explosions: Lebanese foreign minister speaks at UN

Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou-Habib, speaking at a UN Security Council meeting, expressed concern that Israel’s lack of restraint could endanger the security of countries around the world.

At Algeria’s initiative, an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council was convened to discuss the situation in the region. The head of the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs showed photographs showing the consequences of the explosions of Hezbollah terrorists’ pagers.

“Israel fled Lebanon in 2000 and is now repeating the mistakes of the past. The IDF cyber attack on communications equipment resulted in injuries to thousands of innocent people, including women and children. But the responsibility of the UN Security Council does not lie solely with it. The harm to the innocent people injured in Lebanon is a responsibility to all of humanity. If the Council does not condemn this terrorist attack, forcing the attacker to stop his actions, no one in the world will be able to feel safe after having committed this atrocity. Israel has opened Pandora’s box. Now all extremist groups will act in the same way.” Bu-Habib.

UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Türk has expressed deep concern over the attack involving Hezbollah terrorists’ communications equipment. He said the actions were contrary to international law and insisted on a thorough investigation to establish who was involved in the organization and execution of this action. Turk also said he was shocked by what happened.

This was followed by a reaction to Bu-Habib’s speech by the Israeli ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon: “We have been asking for a long time The UN Security Council is responsible for enforcing Resolution 1701 and its violation has been ignored for too long. It is time for Hezbollah and Iran to answer for their actions. Hezbollah must be disarmed and Iran must be held accountable for destabilizing the region.”

He added that Danon pointed out that Abdullah Bu-Habib allowed a terrorist organization to strengthen itself inside the country and start creating chaos among the population. He also stressed that instead of blaming a neighboring state, the focus should be on controlling Hezbollah.

Earlier, Kursor wrote that the UN expressed serious concern over the Israeli attack on the Lebanese capital Beirut. It called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint in this situation.
