Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and head of the Foreign Policy Department of the Presidential Administration, Hikmet Hajiyev, in his statement to Azerbaijan Television, addressed the issue of non-participation of Armenia and France in COP29.
AZERTAC reports that the assistant to the president, speaking about his responsibility and obligation as a party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, drew attention to the fact that Azerbaijan has sent invitations to all countries parties to the Convention, including Armenia and France. and said: “Almost all members of the Convention are in Baku. When we visit the COP29 headquarters and see the discussions held by representatives of states and civil society organizations, we witness once again that the world is in Azerbaijan today. More than 75,000 participants have registered for COP29 has no effect.”
In his statement, Hikmet Hajiyev also spoke about whether Armenia is serious about climate change and climate transformation. He highlighted that in the report prepared by the United Nations Environment Program on the negative effects of climate change in the South Caucasus, before the start of COP29, there were negative trends such as the melting of glaciers in the mountains of the region, the lowering water level of the Caspian Sea and decreasing rainfall, and said: “We thought that Armenia’s participation in COP29 would be a useful opportunity in terms of cooperation in the South Caucasus region, including the discussion joint discussion of important topics such as “Climate change is not serious. A series of ugly propaganda campaigns are being carried out against Azerbaijan. “We believed that Armenia would have contributed to the process of building trust and dialogue by participating in COP29.”
The president’s assistant noted that it is not understandable that France, as a country willing to open dialogue and criticism, instead of maintaining constructive dialogue and discussion at COP29, has adopted a resentful position. He noted that small island states located in the middle of the ocean face the threat of existentialism as a result of climate change. The overseas regions of France and the Netherlands are essentially geographical areas that belong to the category of small island states. Because they do not have their own administration and are still managed as overseas regions, representatives of these areas cannot raise their voices in the context of climate problems. “If we accept that the climate problem is a global problem, based on the principle of inclusion, it is necessary to give each party the opportunity to raise its own problems. This was a normal situation. But unfortunately, the party that talks about inclusion And always encourages constructive criticism. After criticism, France took an indignant position and tried to disguise it with other political disguises. Each country has the right to participate or not, – said Hikmat Hajiyev.
