Clara Agylar, sister of Montsa Agylar, an employee of the municipal cleaning of Barcelona, who died during a wave of heat, says that “her death was completely accessible.” This was said in the press at the headquarters of CGT, an union accompanying the relatives of the deceased, the day after the appearance of Lieutenant of the First Mayor, Laia Bonet to give explanations on this matter.
“They treated us as numbers, and not as people. No one gave us or condolences, ”he complains clear. The family is still waiting for an autopsy, which should determine exactly what is the cause of Montsa’s death. His relatives assured that if, finally, it was shown that death was caused by a heat blow, they would take court claims, even if the company ultimately recognizes death as an accident. “We will condemn the City Council and the FCC company,” Klara said.
The family claims that the winning company “does not“ care about its employees ”enough and does not guarantee that Montsa expressed several times“ not so good that it was not good and that no one accompanied it to the medical center. In addition, there are both FCC and the consistory, so as not to send a notification to employees, which on June 28, on the day the employee died, the yellow warning was activated by extreme heat.
This premise, which also supports CGT, is denied by the company and UGT, the union of the majority in this sector. From this part, they guarantee that managers “never set problems” if the employee should stop his day or go home in case of heat discomfort.
“That day he worked at 37 degrees, and then collapsed at home, in front of my mother. When the ambulance arrived until he was introducing adrenaline, but they could not do anything, – Clara tells that he regrets that the city council, from the first moment he will accept the company’s version ”and refused to start the investigation. The decision in which the changes were made two days after the incident. “We will finish business,” said Liaya Bonet on Tuesday.
But this is not enough for the Montsa family, and they argue that during these weeks they suffered “lies and abuse” by the administration. “We do not want this to happen again. We feel helpless and anger. I know that they will return it to me, but do not lie. ”
For their part, from CGT they agree that the death of Montsa “could be avoided”, and remember that the working conditions of the employees of the municipal cleaning service were “convicted repeatedly before checking labor”. In particular, they guarantee that this agency has issued 16 resolutions in five years – during the last August 2024 – in which it includes the requirements and sanctions to the FCC. “Complaints are repeated. You can’t have a protocol if it is not used, ”says Ramenn San Blass, a CGT delegate in the Barcelona City Council.
“It was proposed that the company distributes water for workers or changes a form that is not breathing, and they are very hot, but there was no answer,” complains the trade union trade union. In the same spirit, the city council and the victorious companies that do not yet apply changes in the protocol of the extreme heat, which both sides agreed after the death of Montsa also shave.
The main novelty is that the protocols of four companies – SACYR, FCC, Urbaser and Sorigué – will be combined so that everyone has the same conditions. It was also decided that thermal measures begin to be used from 34 degrees instead of 37. In these cases, the routes will be considered to avoid work under the sun in the central hours of the day.
And, if 40 degrees are exceeded, the services will be suspended on foot. In addition, immediate use measures were taken, such as five minutes of permission every hour – in addition to those that have already been installed for breakfast and snacks – to drink water and protect from the sun. Isothermal bottles of one liter will also spread to each employee.
But from CGT they regret that the companies have not handed over to the staff of the new protocol, nor measures of future use or those that have already entered into force, such as five minutes. “We are the same or worse than before,” they say, referring to eight workers who suffered a thermal blow during their working day from the moment the employee is death.
