Historic Polaris Dawn mission returns to Earth after first private spacewalk

Participants in the Polaris Dawn mission, which this week hThey made history by performing the first private spacewalkreturned to Earth this Sunday, SpaceX confirmed.

A live webcast showed the Dragon capsule landing with the crew on board at around 0740 GMT off the coast of Dry Tortugas, Florida.

The mission took off Tuesday from Cape Canaveral (Florida) and also passed the 1,400-kilometer mark from Earth, the furthest manned journey since the Apollo missions more than 50 years ago. During its orbital mission, Dragon and its crew participated in the first extravehicular activity (EVA) using special suits developed by SpaceX, the company of billionaire Elon Musk.

The first walk was conducted by specialist Sarah Gillis and the mission’s commander, fellow billionaire Jared Isaacman. The mission conducted 36 research studies and experiments at 31 partner institutions, designed to improve human health on Earthand tested Starlink laser communications in space.
