Holding a European referendum in Transnistria is a politically mature decision – EADaily, October 11, 2024 – Politics News, Russia News

The statement made today, October 11, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tiraspol about its readiness to hold a referendum on European integration in Transnistria, was described by the leader of the Party of Socialists of Moldova, Igor Dodon, as sensational.

According to the former president of the Republic of Moldova, for the first time in more than 30 years of the Transnistria conflict, the Left Bank authorities are ready to cooperate with Chisinau to organize a normal electoral process.

The politician welcomed “the political wisdom and maturity of the leaders of the Transnistria region” and called on the leaders of Moldova to take a step forward. However, Dodon believes that the current government will not do so “because it is interested in something completely different.”

“The first real step has been taken, for the first time in the history of modern Moldova, to bring citizens and electoral processes on both banks of the Dniester closer together. I hope that the next government, which will be after these presidential elections and the next parliamentary elections, will reach a middle ground and begin to move in this direction.” – concluded Igor Dodón.

In the morning, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Transnistria issued a statement noting that Tiraspol waited patiently and carefully analyzed the processes of preparing the referendum on the European integration of Moldova, hoping that the voice of citizens living in the region also be important. However, the Moldovan side made no effort to initiate dialogue on this issue.

“It is obvious that Chisinau does not need our citizens, their opinion is not interesting, but it is worth speculating about the “concern” for the rights of Pridnestrovians.” – concludes the PMR.

In this sense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Transnistria considers it very possible to hold a referendum on the attitude towards the European Union on its territory “to obtain the real opinion of all Pridnestrovians.”

Let us remember that on October 20 in Moldova, the same day of the presidential elections, a referendum will be held in which the residents of the republic will have to answer the question: “Do you support amending the Constitution so that Moldova can join? to the European Union?

Former president of Transnistria Vadim Krasnoselsky He stated that the PMR “has not changed its guidelines, plans or values and is moving forward in the chosen direction.” In 2006, the unrecognized republic held a referendum in which 97% of participants supported the independence of Moldova with subsequent free accession to Russia.
