CIA Deputy Director David Cohen said the future of a possible ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas depends largely on the decision of the Palestinian terror group’s leader.
The US official, without mentioning Hamas terrorist leader Yahya Sinwar by name, said that the fate of a possible ceasefire agreement depends on him. David Cohen stressed at the Intelligence and National Security Summit in Washington that the Israeli side is taking a serious approach to the negotiations.
Mediators from the United States, Egypt and Qatar are making efforts to reach an agreement between the parties, in an attempt to prevent further expansion of the conflict in the region.
“There may be episodes where people back away from the brink, but I don’t think anyone can be confident that these escalation control efforts are something that… any party in the region can control,” Cohen said.
Previously, Kursor wrote that negotiations to resolve the conflict in the Gaza Strip are facing serious difficulties due to Israeli demands. A Lebanese newspaper reported on August 28 that the Israeli side had imposed conditions on the Rafah checkpoint and the Philadelphia Axis, making it much more difficult to reach an agreement.
There are also reports of disagreements among members of the Israeli delegation, which were recorded by the mediators, leading to some rift in the approach to the negotiations.
