How color can radically transform a film

The Joker returned to theaters on October 2. With its orange and blue contrasts, green neon lights, a greenish Gotham… the first part released in 2019 had already marked its extensive use of color. This work earned the film an Oscar nomination for best cinematography. Joker: madness for two continue this exploration. At a time when Hollywood is going crazy for desaturated images, Joker by Todd Philipps make color a key element of the narrative: it helps tell the complexity of a character who struggles with his identity.

This narrative use of color, cinematographer Vittorio Storaro (Apocalypse now, The last emperor) made it his trademark throughout his career. His work inspired a generation of filmmakers, including Lawrence Sher (Joker AND Joker: Folie à deux).
