70 years ago, on November 1, 1954, the Revolutionary Committee for Unity and Action, the future National Liberation Front (FLN), voted in favor of armed struggle. What we will long call, in mainland France, the “events,” is the beginning of an eight-year war of independence. But to understand the twist in history, we must delve deeper into what life was like for the “subjects” of the French Republic during colonization, a varied indigenous population that had nationality, but not citizenship.
