How do categories work? Understand in three minutes

The 2024 Paralympic Games will feature 4,400 athletes – fewer than the 10,500 able-bodied athletes who took part in the Olympic Games. Yet the number of Paralympic events (549) far exceeds the number of Olympic events (329).

This particularity is explained by the classification system, which distributes athletes according to similar physical, visual or cognitive abilities, despite sometimes very different handicaps. Thus, swimming, for example, has fourteen different categories, which are multiplied by the number of traditional categories.

In this video we explain how this classification system works, which uses a points system assigned to each athlete so that the events are as balanced as possible. And if the topic interests you, we invite you to discover, in the following article, explanations about each of the Paralympic disciplines.

“Understand in three minutes”

The explanatory videos that make up the series “Understanding in three minutes” are produced by the Vertical Videos department of World. Distributed mainly on platforms such as TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook, their aim is to contextualise major events in a short format and make news accessible to everyone.
