How do used car dealers hide engine problems?

Unscrupulous sellers who want to sell the car at a higher price often hide even engine problems and pretend they don’t exist. How they do it.

Oku.AzAccording to Rossiyskaya Gazeta, Valery Antyufiev, head of the appraisal department of one of the car repair companies, told this story.

The expert mentioned that one of the most common tricks is to hide low pressure in the engine cylinder. To do this, some sellers add a small amount of engine oil to the combustion chambers through the spark plug holes before checking the compression.

“This trick allows the oil to temporarily fill in the micro-damages and gaps and artificially increase the pressure readings to an acceptable level. For gasoline engines, this reading is typically 10 to 14 kg/cm2 “It happens in the middle,” Valery Antyufyev explained.

“To detect this fraud, it is necessary to start the engine and let it run in neutral (holostoy) for 10 to 15 minutes before measuring the compression. This will allow the oil to flow and will show a true picture of the condition of the engine,” said the expert.

To detect hidden oil leaks, Antyufiev recommends carefully inspecting the rear of the engine with a flashlight. According to him, special attention should be paid to the area around the oil filler neck: even small traces of dirt can indicate problems with the crankcase ventilation system.

Finally, exhaust system problems that masters have learned to hide can be detected with a simple but effective test.

“Start by thoroughly warming up the engine. Then, holding down the accelerator pedal, increase the crankshaft rpm to 3000 and hold this indicator for 10 seconds. After that, sharply increase the rotation frequency to 5000 revolutions and immediately release the accelerator pedal. “If there are hidden problems in the engine, when you release the gas, a characteristic cloud of grayish smoke will come out of the exhaust pipe, which will show the real state of the engine,” explained Valeri Antyufyev.

The expert also warned that some dealers may resort to more subtle methods, for example, pouring diesel fuel into a petrol engine or using special additives that can hide the problems, at least temporarily. With their help, it is possible to reduce engine noise and exhaust fumes, as well as reduce oil consumption.
