According to information provided to the New York Times by the Israeli government and several US officials, Iran could launch an attack against Israel in the coming hours.
The Israeli military confirmed that the United States informed them of the impending attack. The attack will include drones and missiles aimed at Israeli targets, three Israeli officials said.
One US official said they could be ballistic missiles, while another could not specify what type of attack was being planned. All sources provided information anonymously.
If the attack is carried out, it would significantly increase the likelihood of a full-scale war between Israel and Iran, including possible action by Iranian allies throughout the Middle East, American journalists write. For years, the two countries waged a covert war in which Iran sought to destroy Israel while Israel worked to weaken Iran’s influence in the region, destroy its nuclear program and overthrow the Iranian regime, the NYT added.
The two sides are now on the brink of open confrontation after a year of escalating conflict that includes Iranian terrorist allies such as Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen.
The Iranian attack could target three military air bases and an intelligence headquarters north of Tel Aviv, which was evacuated on Tuesday, three Israeli officials said.
Iran last fired on Israel in April, when Israeli airstrikes targeted positions housing senior Iranian commanders visiting Syria. A group of Israeli allies led by the United States helped intercept most of the missiles and drones in April, limiting damage to Israeli infrastructure.
