In Azerbaijan, 4.64 children were diagnosed with autism.
This was reported by the State Agency for Medical-Social Expertise and Rehabilitation under the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population in response to the Bizim.media investigation.
It was reported that there are currently 44,193 people with disabilities under 18 years of age. In the first eight months of 2024, a total of 23,314 children with disabilities received medical and socio-psychological rehabilitation services:
“Four children’s rehabilitation centers operate under the authority of the agency, where effective rehabilitation methods are applied on an outpatient, stationary, online and mobile basis. One of the centers is located in Shamkir, one in Gabala and two in Baku. In In these institutions, children receive complex treatment according to the rehabilitation plan.
The “Rehabus” project aims to increase the accessibility of rehabilitation services for children with disabilities. “Rehabilitation buses pick up children with disabilities (along with their accompanying relatives) at predetermined waiting points in the cities of Baku and Sumgait and take them to the Children’s Rehabilitation Center No. 2 in Baku.”
According to information from the institution, hippotherapy based on international experience is used in the rehabilitation of children with disabilities:
“This therapeutic method has a great effect on the socio-psychological and physiotherapeutic rehabilitation of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, speech disorders and Parkinson’s.”
