Russia is considering the possibility of transferring more advanced weapons to Iran, which could significantly strengthen the military potential of Tehran and its allies. This includes systems such as Su-35 fighter jets and S-400 air defense systems, which could increase tensions in the region, especially in light of the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. Experts believe that the ballistic missiles and drones that Iran supplies to the Russian Federation for use in the war in Ukraine could become a “lever” to receive modern Russian weapons in response.

Iran has likely already received at least one squadron of Su-35s and possibly S-400 systems, the sources said, although these deliveries require time to prepare infrastructure and aircrew. Despite this, the Russian Federation can limit itself to supplying less complex systems, such as anti-ship missiles, so as not to provoke a strong reaction from the international community, including China and Arab countries, which also maintain close ties with Moscow.
Expert Anton Mardasov notes that even if Russia agrees to transfer the Su-35 to Iran, this could negatively affect Iran’s image, as it would demonstrate its dependence on Russian weapons in the confrontation with Israel.
