The FBI and British police carried out a joint operation to arrest a 46-year-old fugitive who had long been on the US list of most wanted terrorists. Daniel San Diego, a well-known animal rights activist and committed vegan, settled in a secluded cottage worth £425,000, bought with a mortgage. The Daily Mail writes about this.
He had virtually no contact with local residents, avoiding any interaction. Neighbors knew him as “Danny” and noted his secrecy. He seemed like a very reserved person. He lived alone, sometimes he cut wood near the house. “We just assumed he had reasons to live like that and left him alone,” said one of the neighbors.
In 2003, San Diego carried out two bombings in California: one on the campus of a biotechnology company in Emeryville and the other at a food processing plant in Pleasanton. Although there were no casualties, there was significant damage to buildings. Upon learning of the FBI surveillance, San Diego parked his car in downtown San Francisco and disappeared.
The FBI included him on the wanted list and noted that the fugitive knows how to navigate and can travel the world. A $250,000 reward was offered for information leading to his capture.
The exact reason why the investigation brought the FBI to Wales is still unknown. However, the arrest operation was successful and “Danny” was taken to London to begin the extradition process. “We could never imagine that we were living next to an international criminal. It’s shocking,” said one Manan resident.
San Diego now faces trial in the United States to face the charges. The arrest ends one of the longest efforts to find a fugitive, and the story of the secretive “Danny” will serve as a reminder that even decades later, justice finds those responsible.
