How the war between Israel and Hamas has divided Macronist deputies since October 7

In the National Assembly, the tribute to the victims of October 7 must take the form of a video on Monday, exactly one year after the Hamas terrorist attacks against the Jewish State. At the initiative of Caroline Yadan, deputy (Renaissance) of the eighth constituency of French residents abroad (which includes Israel), a clip will be broadcast on social networks that will bring together around sixty parliamentarians, not counting the National Rally or the Rebel France. – most of them sponsors of the Hamas hostages.

On the night of the tribute, the participants planned to go to the Paris Cathedral, where the Representative Council of the Jewish Institutions of France (CRIF) is organizing a commemorative evening. METROme Yadan will be in Israel, accompanied by deputy Sylvain Maillard (Renaissance, Paris), invited by the non-governmental organization Elnet, dedicated to strengthening relations between Europe and the Jewish State.

But for the majority of deputies in the presidential camp, the commemorations of the massacres will be carried out individually. Officially, because tributes are organized in their constituency. Unofficially, because the line assumed by Mme Yadan and his followers are putting pressure on part of the Macronist group. Emmanuel Macron’s speech on September 25 at the United Nations in New York – “The war that Israel wages in Gaza has lasted too long” AND “The tens of thousands of Palestinian civilian victims have no justification”declared, was, once again, the example of this.

METROme Yadan is not in tune with the words of the Head of State. “I distance myself very clearly from these statements”he says, adding of the Israeli bombings in Gaza and Lebanon: “It is a service to the entire world to fight against Hamas and Hezbollah. » But within the macronist group Ensemble pour la République (EPR), several of his colleagues do not share his line. “Would we accept that France uses terrorist methods to fight terrorists?replies Moselle MP Ludovic Mendes, referring to the recent series of attacks on booby-trapped pagers and walkie-talkies in Lebanon, attributed to Israeli services. A democratically elected government should not behave like this. »

Fracture

This division is nothing more than the prolongation of the tensions that have shaken the Renaissance parliamentary group (today EPR) since October 7, 2023. Already on October 10, the president of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, had claimed since the privileged position a support “unconditional” to Israel, before traveling to Tel Aviv on October 22, accompanied in particular by the former pro-Republican deputy Meyer Habib, close to the Israeli extreme right. “I support Israel, yes, unconditionally, no”already described the Lower Rhine deputy Charles Sitzenstuhl, in an interview with Figarodeploring “an “ultra-Israeli” tone” within the old majority, “which does not correspond to the line of the President of the Republic.”
