Israeli military observer Yigal Levin managed to shed light on one of the versions of how thousands of pagers of Hezbollah militants in Lebanon could fly simultaneously. In an interview with Radio NV, Levin suggested that Israeli hackers could hack devices equipped with explosive mechanisms that, according to some assumptions, Hezbollah itself installed so that militants could blow themselves up if they were captured.
Levin noted that Hezbollah initially used pagers as a security tool. He noted the irony that centrally purchased devices that were supposed to serve as a means of protection became the cause of a massive disruption. He also stressed that the key role in this case was played not by the mining itself, but by the successful execution of the operation, considering that the purchase and security of these pagers were monitored by the security services of Hezbollah and Iran.
According to Levin, a likely scenario could be the replacement of an entire batch of pagers. He explained that it is almost impossible to extract thousands of devices manually, so perhaps the Israeli intelligence services replaced the entire batch with counterfeit pagers, visually identical to the originals.
