News about “human warmth”

New live. I’ll tell you more about this below, but keep in mind that the first “Human Chaleur” Ideas Festival will take place on December 14, 2024 in Paris (or by video). You will be able to hear a series of ideas, things to do to be (finally) on the right trajectory, and also have a moment that we hope will be collective, joyful and full of hope, in this dark period. You can click here to find out more and reserve your place, in Paris or by video.

Question of the week

“Listening to your episode on hydrogen, I realized that what appear to be solutions to climate change are a little more complicated than we think. How do we know which solutions are serious and which are advertising or greenwashing? Now that you’ve done dozens of interviews for the podcast, how do you rank them? » Question asked by Marie L. at chaud humaine@lemonde.fr.

My answer: Thanks for this question! There is no scientific method to figure things out, but over time I have acquired some reflexes to try to understand what might or might not work. With some questions to ask: do we know how to measure the effect of this solution? How quickly can it be implemented? Who will it affect? What are its disadvantages? I share some ideas with you here, but feel free to add more by writing to heat humaine@lemonde.fr.

Before answering, I would like to take this opportunity to point out (again) the organization of the “Human Chaleur” Festival of Ideas, on December 14 in Paris, at the Théâtre de la Ville. We will discuss concrete ideas and solutions with ten returning podcast guests, notably Marc-André Sélosse, Dominique Méda, Julia Faure, Philippe Bihouix, Aurélien Bigo and many others. To register, click here. If you want to come in a group, with schoolchildren or students for example, you can send an email to aateliers@lemonde.fr.

1 – Does this clue exist in real life?

The question seems silly, but in reality, many of the topics we hear about don’t exist yet (and we don’t necessarily know if they will exist). Hydrogen airplanes, small modular nuclear reactors (called SMRs), nuclear fusion, all of that may be cool, but at the moment it exists in press releases or engineering files. Which doesn’t mean it will never happen… but counting on it now is a very risky bet!
