The situation in Ukraine is difficult. The army faces a shortage of personnel, weapons and trained personnel. Their innovative approach and use of new technologies help, but they are not enough. Therefore, it is necessary to fight against Russian aggression as Ronald Reagan did with the Soviet Union.
Evelyn Farkas, executive director of the McCain Institute and former US congressional and government official, wrote about this in The Hill.
In his opinion, to save Ukraine and avoid World War III, it is necessary to invite it to NATO before Trump takes office.
He believes that Joe Biden must act decisively to admit Ukraine into the alliance as soon as possible.
“Washington must act immediately. Biden must actively work with NATO allies to initiate a rapid invitation of Ukraine to the alliance, which the majority of member countries can quickly ratify,” Farkas said.
She recognizes that bringing Ukraine into NATO carries risks, including the risk that Putin will try to test the alliance’s resolve. That is why he proposes to use the already existing bilateral agreements signed by most NATO countries with kyiv as a basis for the deployment of NATO troops on the territory of Ukraine, which will help deter further aggressive actions by Russia.
The author states that the recent seizure of territory in the Russian Kursk region by Ukrainian troops was an important step, but Putin’s reaction was immediate: he incorporated thousands of North Korean soldiers into the conflict, which widens the war and makes it more global, especially given Russian support from Iran and China.
She speculates that South Korea will likely take the next step by supplying weapons to Ukraine, although she may wait to see how the new Trump administration proceeds.
For European countries, including Western ones, it is increasingly clear that they too can become a target for Russia, Farkas believes. An example of this is the recent attacks carried out by Russian agents in Europe, including attacks on the Paris metro and ammunition depots in the Czech Republic. Agents are also suspected of attempting to attack German military bases and have attempted to plant explosive devices on planes headed to the United States and Canada. These operations bring Europe to the brink of war with Russia. And German intelligence generals are already warning that Russia could attack NATO by the end of the decade.
According to the expert, it is necessary to act decisively to punish Russia for these attacks. First of all, it is worth declassifying information about the operations carried out and actively informing the world community about the real threat, through sanctions. Secondary sanctions could also be imposed on countries that supply technology and components for Russia’s weapons production.
The rapid admission of Ukraine into NATO will strengthen the territorial security of the alliance, which will receive a partner with extensive experience in the fight against Russian aggression. Biden and senators of both parties should support this invitation in the final months of his term. Without the NATO perspective, Ukraine will remain an easy target for Putin.
Recall that Kursor wrote that the next 4-5 months will be critically important for the course of the war, and Ukraine seeks to strengthen its position before the next negotiations.
