Hunter Bidenson of the American president, Joe Bidenpleaded guilty Thursday in a California court to alleged tax evasion to avoid trial.
The defendant’s lawyer announced shortly before the hearing began that Hunter Biden would submit a statement in which will accept a guilty verdictalthough he is considered innocent, according to the channel cnn.
The decision was made shortly before jury selection was to begin, and after the announcement, there was a recess in court for the prosecution to negotiate with the defense.
Jury selection was due to begin Thursday in the second case the president’s son faces this year.
The prosecution accuses Hunter Biden54 years old, not having paid about $1.4 million in federal taxes for a four-year period, from 2016 to 2019.
According to the indictment, he “spent millions of dollars on an extravagant lifestyle instead of paying his taxes.”
The Democratic president’s son faces nine charges, including failure to file and pay taxes and filing false or fraudulent tax returns, according to court documents.
Hunter Biden found not guilty at a first hearing held on January 11 and claimed that, although late, he had paid all his outstanding bills in 2019, once he had recovered from his addictions.
The prosecution is led by special prosecutor David Weiss, the same one who already filed a first complaint against the son of the Democratic president in the middle of this year for three counts of having hidden his addictions by acquiring a weapon in 2018.
This is the This is the second time he has been called up to the bench. after being found guilty on June 2 by a Delaware court of three charges he faced for illegal purchase and possession of a weapon.
In this case, which set a precedent in US history as it was the first time that the son of an active president was convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison.
