“I am constantly threatened with death”

Alejo Vidal-Quadras declares that he is “in constant danger of death» just like the first anniversary of attempted murder who suffered in one of the streets of the Madrid district of Salamanca. This is what the former vice-president of the European Parliament declared in an interview given to OKDIARIO on the occasion of the Honorary Prize which was awarded to him by the Diego de Covarrubias Center in this year’s edition. The main reason for this recognition is precisely his “constant defense of freedoms”, which materialized in his fight against Iranian diet and it almost cost him his life on a fateful November 9, 2023.

In this interview, Vidal-Quadras explains his current state of health, his worry and his fear of being the center of attention of the Iranian regime; the context and motivations for the assassination attempt; and your opinion on Catalan quota.

QUESTION.-How do you feel after this fateful incident?

ANSWER.-Good, good. I’m doing well. There’s always a sequel, but I’m fine. I am operational, which is already a lot. The lower part of my face is asleep, as if stiff. Naturally, a bullet in the face is not a trivial thing. Afterwards, there is always a trace of anxiety. Sometimes you have better times and other times you have worse times. But hey, overall, I no longer take medication to help me with this emotional problem.

Q.- Are you more anxious in the street?

A.- No no. Now I benefit from very complete police protection. That is to say, I am classified as a high-risk person because I am under constant threat of death from the Ayatollah regime. I’m like a Spanish Salman Rushdie. I am under constant threat of death. But fortunately, their first attempt, by a miracle, providential intervention, failed.

Q.- Who was responsible for this attack?

A.- The direct manager is Mehrez Ayari, who is a professional hitman, a hitman. He is accused of other murders and is currently detained in the Netherlands. He is in prison because he was arrested while preparing to kill an Iranian dissident. A journalist exiled in Holland. Dutch police had installed surveillance television cameras near the house of this dissident, who was also threatened with death by the Iranian regime. They detected it with these cameras and arrived quickly.

The Iranian regime, to eliminate those it considers its enemies, resorts to international mafias to whom it entrusts the work. Before, they did it themselves. This was done by commandos of the Revolutionary Guards or agents of its Ministry of Intelligence. But, a few years ago, as this posed very serious problems for them, they entrusted it to hitmen.

Q.- What did you do to arouse such enmity towards Iran?

A.- I have made merits. You said at the beginning that the Diego Covarrubias Center very generously gave me this award. Well, this year they gave me their annual award. I have made two very dangerous enemies. One of them is the Catalan separatists who, as you can understand, are one of their main public enemies, along with other people of great merit, much more than me. They hate us to death. Then I have the Iranians, the Iranian fundamentalist clerics, who are even more dangerous because they kill you.

When I arrive at the European Parliament, they invite me to join an intergroup called Friends of Free Iran. I join and meet the Iranian resistance in exile, the National Council of Resistance of Iran. I became more and more involved and ultimately became one of the most active politicians internationally supporting the Iranian resistance and fighting against the fundamentalist and terrorist Shiite regime in Iran.

“I had all the numbers for them to attack me, but I didn’t think they would dare,” explains Alejo Vidal-Quadras.

In October 2022, the regime publishes the list of sanctioned people, that is to say its enemies, for purposes of intimidation. On this list, there are individuals and organizations. In the list of individuals, I am the first. In the list of organizations, there are two that I chair or have chaired. Of course I had all the numbers, but I didn’t think they would dare. It’s very bold to kill a former vice-president of the European Parliament. I was optimistic. They dared.

Q.- What analysis do you make of the situation between Iran and Israel?

A.- When the October 7 attack was the trigger, Israel’s relations with the Arab world were in a period of relative stability. If the situation had remained stable, improved and the tension had decreased, it would not be good for the Iranian regime.

“Iran’s theocratic and totalitarian regime needs instability, conflict, war to survive,” says Alejo Vidal-Quadras.

The Iranian people have organized numerous demonstrations in recent years which have been drowned in blood. Iran, its theocratic and totalitarian regime needs instability, conflict and war to survive. The Tehran regime orders Hamas to prepare. The Revolutionary Guards have been advising them and preparing this attack for months.

The attack was deliberately cruel, inhumane. They rape and kill children and women. I mean, something that makes you shudder just thinking about it. How can we reach this extreme of inhumanity? This is something that goes beyond the limits. Those who did this are not human beings, they are subhuman. They are like animals.

The Iranian regime had already planned this and that is why it organized this treacherous attack, so that Israel’s reaction would be formidable. I had calculated it perfectly. That’s what I wanted. This is yet another example of the aggressive criminal policy of the Iranian regime, a key element of the Venezuela, Russia and Iran axis, which destabilizes and attempts to weaken, even destroy, the West.

Q.- What do you think of Sánchez’s recognition of Palestine?

A.- This seems to me to be a cowardly, opportunistic and repugnant position. Israel is not perfect, it has its faults and its problems. But Israel is our bastion, the bastion of the West, of Western civilization. It is based on democracy, on freedoms, on the rule of law, on the dignity of the human being.

The position of the Spanish government is typical of these progressive misguided Westerners who weaken and destroy our own civilization. Furthermore, in the case of the Sánchez government, it never acts out of principles or convictions, but rather out of pure opportunism.

Q.- What do you think of the Catalan quota?

A.- It’s a Basque quota. In other words, it is a Basque-style financing system. Catalonia collects all direct and indirect taxes and unilaterally agrees with the State on compensation for so-called common services: Justice, Defense… This is the Basque quota. This is what they negotiate.

This poses two problems. The first is that it is unconstitutional. But just like that, plain and simple. You read the Constitution. Read the part where the financing of autonomous communities is discussed. It is clear that the Constitution provides for special funding for Navarre and the Basque Country, and that is all. All others are under common regime. If they grant Catalonia a Basque quota, the Constitution does not provide for it. In other words, they violate the Constitution.

Second point, this destroys the state treasury and solidarity among Spaniards. If one fifth of the Spanish gross domestic product is withdrawn from the common treasury, Spain disappears. Taxes are not paid by the territories. Citizens and businesses pay. In the regions of Spain where there is more wealth, more product per capita, because people and companies contribute more and this money the State uses it as prescribed by the Constitution to rebalance the areas where there is less wealth.

“If they grant a quota to Catalonia, they liquidate Spain as a nation and the constitutional order,” says Alejo Vidal-Quadras.

Therefore, if they grant Catalonia a quota that represents almost 20% of the national product, they liquidate Spain as a nation, they liquidate solidarity among the Spaniards and they liquidate the constitutional order of 78, I predict that you will. I only ever see the light. In other words, this is one of Sánchez’s tricks to last a few more months in power.
