The residents of Gijón were in suspense one evening after reading blood-curdling news in ‘El Comercio’: a woman had called the police to report that she had seen a head in the water of the Piles River. The authorities immediately opened a security cordon and set to work to locate this supposed head and, if found, the rest of the body. Throughout the night, the operation was launched, while the alarming news spread in the national media. But the twist came in the form of a phone call to the police station.

What actually happened is this. Suárez, 48 years old and a painter by profession, was walking with his dog Mía when she jumped into the river (like so many other times) to catch a bottle carried away by the current. The water was coming down hard and the animal couldn’t get out, so its owner jumped into the water to save her.
At the same time, while he was struggling to breathe and swim, the neighbor only saw a head which she identified as that of a man “because he had a beard”. Armed with this little information, he called the police to carry out the appropriate investigations, until the mystery was finally solved thanks to a call from Suárez himself.
